Beer in Mind: A project for ULB and for beer and sustainability enthusiasts

The Beer in Mind project will unfold in two key phases: a launch phase dedicated to creating an active community, co-creating beers, and initiating research projects on sustainability, followed by a consolidation phase where a sustainable university brewery will come to life, enabling the production of beers in-house while deepening collaborative research and teaching initiatives..

Our vision

Create a university brewery at ULB that embodies innovation, sustainability, and collaboration. This brewery will not only be a place of production but a vibrant space where students, alumni, and beer enthusiasts will come together to co-create, innovate, and learn. We hope it will become a pillar of the university community, a laboratory for applied research, and a model for sustainable transition in the brewing sector.

Beyond the university, we aim to support the brewing industry and other breweries in their sustainable and ecological transition by offering them concrete solutions derived from the research and co-creation projects conducted within the brewery.

Our objectives

Create an engaged community

Bring together students, alumni, and beer enthusiasts around a common vision. In collaboration with the ACE, the BEA, ULB Alumni, the UAE, and the faculty associations, we want to co-create unique recipes, produce them through custom brewing, and share them with our community. This approach will allow us to:

  • Subsidise student activities.
  • Create a strong and playful bond between the members of the community.

Investing in research and education

Subsidise and develop interdisciplinary study and research projects focused on sustainability. These projects will aim to :

  • Improve brewing processes to reduce costs and minimise ecological impact.
  • Recycling waste to create new sources of income.
  • Putting theoretical knowledge into practice, not only in scientific fields but also in areas such as economics, law, management, and many others.
  • Support the creation of innovative spin-offs.

Create a sustainable university brewery

The brewery will be a production space for beers co-created with the community and a hub of innovation to help other breweries in strating their sustainable transition..

Once the brewery is operational, it will allow us to:

  • Produce beers in-house for students, with increased diversity through the creation of a specific beer by student society, faculty, or association.
  • Produce beers externally for alumni and beer enthusiasts, with recipes defined by community members.
  • Test the solutions arising from research projects.
  • Strengthen the sustainable strategy of ULB.

Supporting small and medium breweries in their sustainable transition

  • Develop tailored solutions: Create tools and processes suited to the specific needs of small and medium-sized breweries to improve their energy efficiency and reduce their ecological footprint.
  • Waste revaluation: Proposing innovative methods to transform by-products (spent grains, hops, yeasts, CO₂) into economic and sustainable resources.
  • Collaboration and knowledge sharing: Working hand in hand with breweries to test, refine, and integrate solutions arising from research projects conducted within the university brewery.
  • Pilot projects: Testing innovations before their large-scale implementation in partner breweries.

Our Values

Sustainability and innovation

We are committed to developing sustainable solutions that will benefit both the university brewery and other breweries undergoing ecological transition.

Collaboration and inclusivity

This project is based on a collaborative dynamic where every member, whether a student, alumni, or enthusiast, can actively contribute to its success..

Learning and sharing

We believe in the importance of an educational project that enables students and researchers to transform their theoretical knowledge into concrete and impactful solutions..

Community engagement

Beer in Mind is not just a brewery project: it is an initiative aimed at strengthening the ties between all members of ULB and creating a sense of belonging to a shared vision.
